It’s time to talk about superheroes! Having a superhero week in your speech room is fun because every child normally has a superhero that they like/know of. There are also so many different superhero speech therapy activities that you can do! I’ve listed a few of my favorites that fall within this theme. I hope that you are able to incorporate a few into your sessions!
Create a Crest Activity
This is a pretty simple activity to complete but you can target so many different goals with this. Most children are familiar with Superman and his crest, and this activity will let them design their own. You just need to find a blank picture of crest online and print it out.
What can you target while doing this? You can work on requesting the items they want to decorate it or you can work on labeling colors. You can also work on asking/answering WH- questions (e.g. “What color are you going to use next?” or “Where are you going to put that color?”). Another great way to use this activity is to have the child design their crest and then describe how they are a superhero in real life. Are they kind? Are they smart? Being a superhero is more than just having superpowers!
Books
I always enjoy using books in my therapy sessions. Books allow you to target WH- questions, inferencing, vocabulary, articulation, and so much more. One book that I enjoy using is Pete the Cat: Super Pete. This book is simple enough for a younger kid to understand and incorporates many different colors and some vocabulary that can be worked on. This is a great book to use to work on sequencing with how simple it is. You can also cover up the words to create a pictureless book!
Chutes and Ladders
Did you know that they had a superhero themed Chutes and Ladders? This was new to me and something that popped up when I was looking around on how to up my superhero themed week. My children love to play this game and it helps when working on turn-taking, articulation drilling, and many other goals.
Language Scenes
I have a language scene that I use in my sessions designed specifically for my superhero week. It has WH- questions and following directions for it but can be used for many other targets as well. I love using language scenes because you can work on various goals like describing, negation, and expanding utterances.
