Are you wondering what themes and activities you can do during springtime in speech therapy? Are you trying to find activities to work on with mixed articulation and language kids? Check out this list of themed activities and ideas that you can use below!
What themes can you do during the springtime?
Iāve put together a list of a few themes to do during spring. Spring is from the end of March all the way through June, so there are plenty of other themes you can incorporate, but these ones below are my favorites!
- Spring
- Easter
- Earth Day
- Bugs/Insects
- Camping
- Picnics
I know that using themes in speech therapy can seem daunting, but I am here to help you realize the potential it has on you as a speech therapist and also the kids! For me, using the same game over and over again or the same materials can sometimes make work less enjoyable, so thatās where themed lesson planning comes into play! Changing up the theme weekly or every few weeks allows the kids to stay motivated and engaged but also allows you as a therapist to be able to continue to love what you do.
Spring Theme
The obvious theme to do during the springtime is a spring theme. There are many books that you can incorporate into your sessions, and you can do a fun scavenger hunt to find different types of spring items, like bees or flowers. Scavenger hunts are a fun idea to incorporate into your sessions to work on vocabulary, describing, or even articulation. You can write certain words that need to be targeted in your articulation sessions on the back of the picture and when the child finds it, they have to say that word a certain number of times or in a sentence.
Some of my favorite books for this theme include Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms and Little Blue Truck’s Springtime.
You can check out my Spring Weekly Lesson Plan if you want to incorporate this theme into your sessions!
Easter Theme
Easter takes place during the spring and is a fun theme to do with your kids! You can create a sensory bin that is filled with Easter eggs with different items inside from vocabulary cards to articulation cards!
There are so many books that you can use for this theme, but my favorites include Pete the Cat: Big Easter Adventure and How to Catch the Easter Bunny.
You can check out my Easter Weekly Lesson Plan that is packed full of book companion worksheets for one of the books above and many other fun activities!
Earth Day Theme
Earth Day takes place every year on April 22nd. I love doing this theme in my sessions because teaching our kids about the importance of protecting our planet is something I am passionate about.
If you are into gardening, a fun activity that you could do with your kids this week is to plant some plants or flowers outside or even in pots inside your room! Seeds and soil can be bought from a gardening store, and you can use old milk or juice cartons cuts in half to plant them.
Some themed books you can use include Anywhere Farm and It’s Earth Day!
If you are interested in using this theme during your session, you can check out my no prep and printable Earth Day Weekly Lesson Plan.
Bug/Insect Theme
While I am definitely not a fan of bugs, I have so many kids that love them, and decided to start incorporating this theme into my sessions during the springtime. You can grab some bug toys to use in your sessions or even play the game Cootie!
My favorite book for this theme is An Ant’s Day Off, but there are plenty of others including The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Ten Little Ladybugs.
You can check out my Bug Weekly Lesson Plan if you want to incorporate this theme into your sessions. š
Camping Theme
Spring is the best time to go camping because it’s not too hot but it’s not too cold, either! Many of my kids have never been camping so I like to do this theme to help teach them about it. It is also engaging for most of them since this is something new to them! A fun activity that I like to do during this time is a matching game. You can print off pictures of different items you need to go camping online or buy this matching game.
Some camping themed books you can incorporate include Curious George Goes Camping and Pete the Cat Goes Camping.
If you are interested in using this theme during your session, you can check out my Camping Weekly Lesson Plan.
Picnic Theme
I absolutely love going on picnics in the spring, so I created a Picnic Lesson Plan to do with my kids. You can create a picnic by making pretend sandwiches or even using these picnic baskets in a sensory bin or activity.
My favorite books to use during this time are A Perfect Picnic and We’re Going on a Picnic. You can also incorporate any book that talks about picnic food items!
I also created a free Food Workbook that can be downloaded and incorporated into this lesson plan as well! It includes some vocabulary cards and a language scene at no cost. š
I hope that this post has given you some ideas on what springtime themes and activities you can do during your speech therapy sessions. Let me know down below if you do any of these and which ones are your favorites! Would you add any others to this list?
Happy Spring!!
