Are you wondering what activities you can do in your speech therapy sessions for New Year’s? This time can be rough for kids because they are coming back from their holiday break so I like to incorporate as many engaging and fun activities as I can. Keep reading to see what speech and language activities you can incorporate into your sessions this week that are based all on New Year’s.
What activities can you do for New Year’s?
I try to make my sessions after New Year’s as exciting as possible. I know that a lot of kids are bummed that they have to be back at school, so I try to make them excited to come to speech.
Some activities that I enjoy incorporating include:
- New Year’s Resolution Activity
- Coloring Activities
- Books
- Sensory Bins
A fun activity to work on vocabulary and formulating sentences is to do a New Year’s Resolution activity. You can also use this to work on following directions. This can be easily done by grabbing a piece of paper and giving it to each child. You can have them write however many numbers for the number of resolutions then have them write down what each resolution is. If you have younger kids, you can have them draw instead of write.
To ease back into your therapy sessions, you can always do a coloring activity. In order for the child to get the color they want they have to hit their target first. This activity can also be used to work on following directions or turn taking. You can do a quick Google search for “New Year’s Coloring Pictures” to find a ton that are free.
Books are one of my favorites to use in my speech therapy sessions. There are so many different goals that you can target with books while reading and having fun. One of my favorite New Year’s books is The Night Before New Year’s, but there are many others such as Shante Keys and the New Year’s Peas and Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution. If you don’t own any of these books but want to use them, you can pull most of the readings up on YouTube!
Sensory bins would be a fun activity to use in your session. You can create a New Year’s themed sensory bin by taking confetti and beans and mixing them together. You can then create some vocabulary cards of New Year’s items and add in some other articulation cards, or any other type of cards needed to focus on the goals of your kids.
