Do you need ideas on what themes you can do in June during your speech therapy sessions? Do you need ideas on themes that will keep your kids engaged and help them stay motivated during each session? Doing themes in your sessions allows you, as a speech therapist, to enjoy the sessions just as much as the kids do with new and exciting materials too!
Below is a list of some of my favorite themes that I like to do during the month of June. I have also included a few books that you can use with each theme along with activities that you can easily put together. I hope that this gives you some ideas on what you can do in your sessions during the month!
What themes can you do in June in your speech therapy sessions?
My favorite themes to do in the month of June include:
- Farm
- Carnival
- Beach Day
- Dinosaurs
- Summer
- End of School
Farm
I like doing a farm theme throughout the year, but I also love to do a farm theme in June. A fun activity would be to print out some pictures of different farm animals you might see and place them around your room for a scavenger hunt. You can also print them all out on one sheet of paper for a search and find or use it to work on descriptions, inferencing, WH- questions, and more!
My favorite books for this theme include On the Farm, Good Night Farm, and Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type.
If you are wanting a lesson plan that is no prep and includes pre-made vocabulary cards and book companion activities, you can check out my Farm Lesson Plan.
Carnival
I love doing a carnival theme in June because the start of summer means that the carnivals will be making their way around some towns. There are many different carnival themed games you can buy on Amazon that you can use in your sessions to target different goals.
Some fun carnival books include Mr. Ferris and His Wheel and Daniel Goes to the Carnival.
You can check out my Carnival Lesson Plan for activities to use during this theme that has language and articulation materials included in it.
Beach Day
Going to be the beach is one of the best parts of summer, so I always love to do this theme during the month of June. My favorite books for this theme include Day at the Beach, Curious George Goes to the Beach, and Penguin on Vacation.
You can create a sensory bin with kinetic sand, shells, and rocks to use during your session. You can even hide different vocabulary cards or articulation cards in the sand for your kids to find and practice.
If you are interested in using this theme during your session, you can check out my no prep and printable Beach Day Lesson Plan.
Dinosaurs
This is another theme that you can do year-round, but I like to do it in June, especially with my kids that love dinosaurs. I like to use a sensory bin full of kinetic sand and hide different dinosaurs in the sand for the kids to find. I’ll also include any other vocabulary or articulation cards that might need to be worked on for the kids to find.
My favorite dinosaur books include Digging up Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Bones, and One More Dino on the Floor.
I have a Dinosaur Lesson Plan that includes different articulation and language activities if you are interested in something that is no prep and printable!
Summer
Summer starts at the end of June, so this is the best time to do this theme (you can also do it in July!). Books to read for this theme include The Night Before Summer Vacation and Summer Days and Nights.
A quick and easy activity to complete would be to grab some paper and have each kid draw a picture on what they are looking forward to doing during the summer.
You can get my Summer Lesson Plan full of pre-made activities if you don’t have the time to plan your own activities.
End of School
If you work in the schools, this might be a great time to do an end of the school year theme! You can give out awards/certificates to all your kids for goals they met throughout the year along with a small gift/piece of candy.
The two books that I enjoy using for this theme include Last Day, Hurray! and I Knew You Could!
