Do you need ideas on what themes you can do in July during your speech therapy sessions? With kids being out of school and in a summer break mindset, doing themes will help to keep them engaged and motivated during each session. Themes also allow you, as a speech therapist, to enjoy the sessions just as much as the kids do, too!
Below is a list of some of my favorite themes that I like to do during the month of July. With each theme, you’ll find a few books that you can use along with activities that you can easily put together. I hope that this gives you some ideas on what you can do in your sessions during the month!
What themes can you do in july in your speech therapy sessions?
My favorite themes to do in the month of July include the following:
- Independence Day
- Jungle/Rainforest
- Beach Day
- Space
- Summer
- Ice Cream
independence day
Independence Day takes place on July 4th, which means this is a theme that you can always do in July! My favorite books for this theme include The Night Before 4th of July, F is for Flag, and Red, White, and Boom!
A fun activity would be to create a red, white, and blue sensory bin. You can fill a sensory bin with red, white, and blue items such as pompoms, beads, and ribbons. You can then put different vocabulary cards, articulation cards, or anything else related to the goals your kids are working on.

jungle/rainforest
Doing a jungle/rainforest theme is fun for any kid because of all the types of animals that you find there. You can easily print pictures of different animals off Google and use them in your sessions in sensory bins, as a matching activity, or in a scavenger hunt.
Some fun jungle themed books include The Umbrella and The Great Kapok Tree.

Beach Day
Going to be the beach is one of the best parts of summer, so doing this theme during the month of July is great. My favorite books for this theme include Day at the Beach, Curious George Goes to the Beach, and Penguin on Vacation.
You can create a sensory bin with kinetic sand, shells, and rocks to use during your session. You can even hide different vocabulary cards or articulation cards in the sand for your kids to find and practice.

space
This is a theme that you can do year-round and there are so many different activities you can do during this theme. For an easy activity, you can print out pictures of different types of planets and do a scavenger hunt around your room. You can also do a matching game by printing out two copies of each planet. You can add different numbers onto the cards to have your articulation kids practice their words that many amount of times before taking their next turn.
My favorite space themed books include Pete the Cat: Out of this World, The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System, and There’s No Place Like Space!

Summer
Summer starts at the end of June, so July is an awesome time to do this theme in your sessions. Books to read for this theme include The Night Before Summer Vacation and Summer Days and Nights.
A quick and easy activity to complete would be to grab some paper and have each kid draw a picture on what they are looking forward to doing during the summer.

ice cream
July weather is warm which makes it a great time to do an ice cream theme! My favorite books for this theme include Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise and Gorilla Loves Vanilla.
You can create a sensory bin with different colored sand and an ice cream playset to use during your session. The ice cream scoop can be used to scoop up the kinetic sand and place into toy bowls or cones. You can even hide different vocabulary cards or articulation cards in the sand for your kids to find and practice.
