Many of the kids that I see absolutely LOVE football, so it comes as no surprise that I have to do a football theme in my therapy sessions. If I’m being honest, I am a huge fan also, so I enjoy doing football themed activities in my speech therapy sessions just as much as my kids do. It took me a while to figure out how I could incorporate this theme, so I figured I would share everything I found with you.
Books
Reading a book that is football themed is a great way to target various language and articulation goals. Some of my favorite football themed books are below! You can look up a lot of these books online on YouTube, so you don’t have to buy them, either.
- Football with Dad
- Goodnight Football
- The Berenstain Bears Play Football!
- Let’s Play Football
- Dino-Football
- Kick the Football, Charlie Brown!
Games
My kids always love when it’s game day in therapy! After looking online for several board games that were football themed, I couldn’t find anything that fit what I needed. I created a Football Field Frenzy open-ended board game that has been a perfect fit during my therapy sessions! I love it because I can use it with most of the kids on my caseload to target any of their goals. It is meant to be paired with any other speech therapy materials you might while helping to keep the football theme for the week.
A few other games that I have looked into buy on Amazon include Fumble! or NFL Mascots Matching Game.
Arts & Crafts
Many of my kids also love doing arts and crafts. If you have any kids on your caseload that like to draw, considering trying out directed drawing activities. I love doing these because even if my kids aren’t naturally good at drawing, they are able to follow the directions and create masterpieces either way!
Two free options that you can also look into include creating an Origami Football or completing a Football Helmet Coloring Page.
Mixed Language and Articulation Groups
If you have any mixed language and articulation groups like I do, it can be rough finding activities that incorporate both goals. These football articulation worksheets and football language worksheets work well in mixed groups because they have similar layouts! They target multiple goals and can easily be printed with no prep required.
All-In-One Football Workbook
If you need something that can target various goals, check out this football speech therapy workbook. It is packed full of book companion activities, articulation materials, alphabet football flashcards, colored helmet flashcards, and more! Many of these activities work great alongside other games and activities, too (including the Football Field Frenzy board game)!
I hope that these ideas have given you some inspiration on football themed activities to do in speech therapy. Let me know down below if you use any of them!
