Do you need ideas on what themes you can do in March during your speech therapy sessions? Do you need ways to make speech therapy more fun? Using themes in speech therapy has always been a favorite of mine because it allows the kids to stay motivated and engaged during each session. It also allows you, as a speech therapist, to enjoy the sessions just as much as the kids do with new and exciting materials.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite March themes for your speech therapy sessions along with a few books and activities that you can do for each one. I hope that this gives you some ideas on what you can do in your sessions this month!
What themes can you do in March in your speech therapy sessions?
With March comes the start of spring in the northern hemisphere and the changing weather conditions. This means that you can focus on all the different weather elements and activities that are fun to do in the spring. My favorite themes include:
- Zoo
- Spring
- Weather
- St. Patrick’s Day
- Dr. Seuss
Zoo Theme
Many of my kids love going to the zoo and I feel like one of the best times to go is during the month of March when the weather is getting warmer. I like to do a zoo theme in my therapy sessions because it allows for great carryover with vocabulary and other goals!
Some of my favorite zoo books include The View at the Zoo and Put Me in the Zoo. A fun activity would be to create a sensory bin that is full of zoo animals to work on vocabulary, describing, or inferencing. You can also use vocabulary cards to do this, too. You can easily find free pictures to print off online by searching for the animal names on Google.
If you are wanting a lesson plan that is no prep and includes pre-made vocabulary cards and book companion activities for one of the books above, you can check out my Zoo Lesson Plan.
You can also check out my blog post on my Speech Therapy Push-In Activities. I talk about a fun zoo themed bundle that is great to use on the go!
Spring Theme
Spring starts in March, so this is the perfect time to do a theme based on this season! A fun activity that you can incorporate would be to describe any flowers, animals, or even weather that takes place during this time. You can also do a sorting activity that sorts different items found in the different seasons for spring versus winter. You can go onto Google and print out some images of these different items for some easy (and free) activities.
My favorite books for this theme include Little Blue Truck’s Springtime and Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms.
Take a look at my Spring Weekly Lesson Plan if you want to incorporate this theme into your sessions!
Weather Theme
March is a great month to do a weather theme in your sessions. In the northern hemisphere, March means changing to warmer weather and the springtime storms! This is a great time to do a sorting activity for different weather conditions and clothes you would wear during each one. You can also incorporate a scavenger hunt of all the different conditions!
Some fun books you can incorporate for this theme are The Meteorologist in Me, The Wonder of Thunder, and All About Weather.
My Weather Weekly Lesson Plan includes the activities listed above and more! The best thing about it is that it is no prep and printable!
St. Patrick’s Day Theme
In the middle of March is the holiday of St. Patrick’s Day. I wrote an entire blog post on this theme that you can read here. This is such a fun theme with many different activities you can incorporate that I knew it needed its own blog post.
If you want to skip straight to checking out the lesson plan I created and everything that you get with the download, you can see it here.
Dr. Seuss Theme
Dr. Seuss Day is celebrated on March 2nd because that is when his birthday was. He contributed so much literature that is still a huge part of children’s lives today that it is a no brainer to do a Dr. Seuss theme in your therapy sessions. I own quite a few Dr. Seuss books and love using them in my sessions! Some of my favorite ones are Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and Fox in Socks. These books are great to work on rhyming and even articulation.
A fun activity would be to print out a picture of The Cat in the Hat’s hat and have kids decorate them or print out strips of paper with their different targets on them that they can glue down on the base of the hat during their sessions.
March Speech Therapy Lesson Plan Bundle
If you are wanting to incorporate more than one of the themes above into your therapy sessions, then take a look at my March Speech Therapy Lesson Plan Bundle. There are 4 themes included with this bundle (Zoo, Weather, St. Patrick’s Day, and Spring), totaling to over 500 pages of materials.
Each one of these lesson plans includes book companion activities, a language scene, and activities for both language and articulation. For more information on my themed lesson plans, you can take a look at the guide here.
